Renovation support

Thermal insulation subsidy in Valais

In Valais, insulating the façade, roof, walls and floor against the ground is subsidised per insulated m², for buildings permitted before 2000. You apply before works begin, on the Buildings Programme portal. The directive in force is the 2025 edition: the canton has not published one for 2026.

The amount depends on the insulated area. Support is capped at 30% of the insulation cost and is not paid below the minimum shown in the rate.

Who can apply

  • The building owner: the support is paid to them.
  • A building whose building permit predates 2000, identified by its federal building identifier (EGID).
  • Elements around parts that were already heated before the works: façade, roof, walls and floor against the ground.
  • Detached houses as well as apartment buildings and condominiums (for a condominium, a power of attorney from the co-owners if the account is not the community's).

What is not subsidised

  • Replacing windows and doors.
  • Insulation against unheated spaces, such as the attic floor or the basement ceiling.
  • New buildings, extensions and raised storeys.
  • Works already started or completed when you apply.
  • A project whose calculated support stays below the minimum shown in the rate.

Technical conditions

  1. U-value of at most 0.20 W/m²K after works (0.25 W/m²K for walls and floors more than 2 m below ground).
  2. U-value improved by at least 0.07 W/m²K compared with the initial state.
  3. A CECB Plus is required when more than 142 m² of envelope is insulated; for buildings the CECB does not cover (SIA 380/1 categories 7 to 12), a summary analysis following the cantonal specifications.
  4. Protected building or element: relaxed requirements, with evidence that the U-values cannot be achieved.
  5. Works carried out by qualified professionals (federal VET diploma) and with the required permits: nothing is paid for unauthorised works.
  6. Support capped at 30% of the insulation investment; together with other bodies' support, no more than 50% in total.

The application, step by step

  1. Get detailed quotes (with the insulation's lambda value), the area calculation and U-values; above 142 m², a CECB Plus.
  2. Apply before any works start on the Buildings Programme portal (Valais): site plan, photos, quotes, areas and U-values, in no more than 10 attachments.
  3. Wait for the email confirming receipt: works may start from then, at your own risk. Only the grant decision secures the support.
  4. Complete the works within 24 months of the decision. Any change to the project must be approved by the cantonal energy service (SEFH).
  5. No later than 2 months after the decision expires, submit the completion form on the platform: final invoices (insulation, thickness, m²), photos, bank details and a copy of the building permit.
  6. Declare the subsidy: it is taxable income, while many energy investments remain deductible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I insulate only the roof?

Yes. Support is calculated per m² of insulated element: façade, roof, walls or floor against the ground can be done separately, provided the element encloses a space that is already heated and the support exceeds the minimum. If the attic is unheated, it is the attic floor that would need insulating, and that is not subsidised.

Is replacing my windows subsidised?

Not under this measure: windows and doors are excluded. In a comprehensive renovation that gains at least two CECB classes, measure M-10 takes over; it cannot be combined with per-element insulation support.

My building was permitted after 2000: am I eligible?

No. Only buildings whose building permit predates 2000 qualify. The same rule applies to comprehensive renovation (M-10).

What if I add a storey or extend at the same time?

Raised storeys and extensions give no right to support. Only insulation of the existing parts, already heated before the works, is subsidised: keep the two separate in the quotes and in the area calculation.

Does my Valais municipality add its own support?

Some municipalities have their own schemes: the canton advises asking your municipality and publishes a summary of municipal measures. If another body supports you, the cantonal support is reduced so that the total does not exceed 50% of the investment.

What happens if the cantonal budget runs out?

The programme can be stopped without notice once the budget is used up, and there is no right to support. If funds are short, the canton may set up waiting lists; a postponed payment carries no default interest.

Who can help me prepare the application?

The canton publishes an official list of energy renovation facilitators (October 2026 edition), trained by HES-SO Valais-Wallis, the Bureau des Métiers and the cantonal energy service. The CECB Plus itself is issued by a CECB expert.
